HCRA Approved Course for Home Builders and Vendors

The Ontario Building Code (OBC) and Act are daunting documents that are essential to understand and use as construction professionals. In this course you will learn about the history and administration of the code, how to apply it in your day-to-day work, and the responsibilities of the various parties covered by the code and Act.

Course topics include:
  • The importance of the Ontario Building Code
  • How the Ontario Building Code was developed and how it is updated
  • How to navigate the Ontario Building Code and Act
  • How to use the Ontario Building Code to determine building requirements
Exam:

If you are applying for your HCRA License, successfully completing the exam is required for your application. This exam is a multiple-choice, true/false and multiple-answer format. You must have a copy of the 2012 Ontario Building Codes Compendium (2 Vol) with you for the exam either in printed or PDF format. The exam is available 24/7, an appointment is not needed, and you will have access to complete your exam for 60 days. You will have three (3) attempts to pass the exam. The pass mark is 70%.

Prerequisites

Who Should Attend

  • Those interested pursuing a career path in construction management
  • Those applying for a home builder or vendor license in Ontario who needs to meet competency requirements put in place under section 38 of the New Home Construction Licensing Act, 2017 (NHCLA)

What You’ll Learn

Course Materials and Fees

You will be required to either purchase a hard copy, or download a digital copy, of the 2012 Ontario Building Codes Compendium (2 Vol) for this course. The textbook is not included in the cost of the course. You can purchase a copy here and you can access PDF version here.

Additional Notes

This course is 14 hours of instruction. Course hours can be used towards the Gold Seal Certification application for credits, subject to credit approval upon review. Note: every 6 hours of learning equals 1 Gold Seal credit.
